Canadian Study Permits:

A Canadian study permit is a crucial document for foreign nationals enrolling at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. This temporary status document allows foreign nationals to study in Canada for a specific duration. It’s important to note that obtaining a study permit is a prerequisite before entering Canada.

To qualify for a study permit, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Letter of Acceptance: Applicants must provide an acceptance letter from a recognized Canadian educational institution.
  2. Funds: Documentation demonstrating sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses while studying abroad in Canada is required.
  3. Purpose of Stay: Applicants must demonstrate to the immigration officials that they are coming to Canada specifically to study and have intentions to leave within the permitted study permit duration.
  4. Background: Eligibility for a study permit requires a clean criminal record. There are no exceptions made or granted.
  5. Medical Fitness: Applications must undergo a medical examination and present themselves to be in good health prior to entering Canada for studying.

Eligibility:

A select group of international students from Vietnam, China, the Philippines, or India may apply through the Student Direct Stream. To quality for this stream, applicants must prepare and submit the following:

  • A copy of their acceptance letter from a recognized educational institution.
  • Confirmation of their upfront medical examination.
  • Proof of a $10,000 Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC).
  • A language test form with a minimum score of 6 in English (International English Language Testing System) a score of at least 7 in French, or proof of completion of a Canadian curriculum high school.

Applicants who do not meet these requirements will be processed through the standard study permit application process.

Length of stay with study permit:

Typically, a study permit is valid for the duration of the applicant’s program plus an additional 90 days for preparations to leave Canada or apply for an extension. If studies conclude earlier than expected, the permit will expire 90 days after completion, based on the data received from the school or the issuance of the diploma, degree, or certificate.

Study permit extension:

If a student’s study permit is nearing expiration, they may apply for an extension, if necessary, if they have a valid reason to do so. This extension request should be submitted at least one month before the current permit expires, using the IMM 129: Application to Change Conditions or Extend Your Stay in Canada Form.
